Portugal bans burqa and niqab in public — fines up to €3,000

Portuguese President Antonio Jose Seguro has signed a law banning the wearing of the burqa and niqab in public spaces. Violations carry a fine of up to €3,000. The president justified the decision on grounds of public safety and combating gender-based discrimination.
