Phage T7 kinase disarms bacterial defences by phosphorylating nearly all host proteins

Scientists have found that bacteriophage T7 disables bacterial defence systems through its kinase enzyme T7K, which phosphorylates nearly all host and phage proteins during infection. The enzyme's preference for DNA-binding proteins allows it to specifically neutralise bacterial defences targeting nucleic acids. The finding advances understanding of how viruses overcome bacterial immunity.
