Mouse brains encode leader-follower social roles in prefrontal cortex
Mice spontaneously develop leader and follower roles during cooperative tasks, a new study finds. The medial prefrontal cortex encodes these role dynamics and maintains an egocentric map of the partner's social value and position. The findings shed light on the neural basis of social hierarchies in mammals.
