Peruvian ice core yields 2,000-year atmospheric methane record
A tropical ice core drilled in Peru has yielded a 2,000-year record of atmospheric methane concentrations — the first historical global CH₄ record from low latitudes. Using a four-box atmospheric model, researchers found that equatorial methane sources were stronger than previous estimates based solely on polar ice cores. The findings have implications for understanding past and present climate.
