Rising CO₂ boosts C4 grass biomass production in water-limited savannas
A meta-analysis of CO₂ enrichment experiments combined with three decades of southern African savanna observations shows that rising CO₂ levels significantly boost biomass production in C4 grasses in water-limited environments. The findings challenge prior assumptions that C4 plants respond weakly to CO₂ fertilisation compared with C3 species. The result has broad implications for savanna ecology and global carbon budgets.
