Scientists identify wake-activated neurons that control sleep drive in mice

Whole-brain activity mapping, targeted cell manipulations and electrophysiology in mice have identified wake-activated neuronal populations that regulate sleep drive. Manipulating these cells persistently reduced the animals' daily sleep amount. The findings could advance understanding of insomnia and other sleep disorders in humans.
