France legalises assisted dying — law comes into force
France has legalised assisted dying after its highest constitutional authority approved the legislation, which was then published in the official journal. The law applies to adults with incurable conditions causing unbearable suffering, and France now joins the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada in permitting the practice. The law is formally termed "aid in dying" rather than euthanasia.
