Astronomers discover 'mega-Earth' 23 times more massive than our planet

Astronomers have discovered GJ 523b, a rocky "mega-Earth" with a mass 23 times that of Earth but only about 2.5 times its width. Its unusually high density suggests the planet has little atmosphere, which surprises scientists — objects this large are typically expected to accumulate a thick gas envelope. "This isn't what we expected at all," said lead study author Max Kroft.
