Ethiopia's digital ID scheme gives refugees a path out of limbo

The Ethiopian government, in partnership with UNHCR, is mass-issuing digital identity documents to refugees through a system called Fayda — Amharic for "value". The ID allows holders to move freely within Ethiopia, access education and seek employment. The initiative is offering hope especially to thousands of Somali refugees who fled Al-Shabaab and have spent years or even decades in camps.
