Russia and Wagner fill the vacuum left by Western forces in the Sahel

After the collapse of the G5 Sahel coalition, Russia moved into the resulting strategic vacuum in the region. Moscow's main instrument was the Wagner Group, which offered local governments protection, training and operational support in exchange for political influence and access to natural resources.
