San Diego Padres minor-league staffer detained by ICE amid pending asylum claim

Oswaldo Pirela, a 34-year-old Venezuelan and minor-league catching coordinator for the San Diego Padres, was detained by ICE at El Paso airport in Texas while returning from a work trip. His family says he has a pending asylum claim and has continuously renewed his work authorisation. The Department of Homeland Security stated he lacks legal status and will face removal proceedings.
