Rogue SIM cards can hijack EV chargers and industrial routers, researchers warn

Researchers from the University of Birmingham and security firm Fuzzware have found that so-called Proactive SIM cards can instruct host devices to execute attacker-chosen commands, potentially taking them over entirely. Nine of 26 tested devices were vulnerable, with the flaw concentrated in machine-to-machine hardware — six of eight cellular modules, including those in EV chargers, industrial routers and car telematics units. Exploitation requires the attacker to already control the SIM; Qualcomm has produced a hardened configuration, but no vendor has yet issued a public advisory.
