Astronomers detect twisted magnetic fields driving protostar jets for the first time

Using the ALMA radio telescope, astronomers have for the first time directly detected the twisted magnetic fields surrounding a young binary protostar. For decades, scientists theorised that these complex magnetic structures drive the powerful jets emitted by forming stars, but lacked the tools to confirm it. The discovery validates existing stellar formation models.
