Meta faces federal trial — 29 US states seek up to $200 billion fine

A coalition of 29 US states has launched a federal trial against Meta, accusing the company of deliberately designing Facebook and Instagram to maximise time spent by young users and then exploiting their data. Prosecutors allege Meta knew its platforms could addict children and concealed the danger. States are seeking a penalty of up to $200 billion.
