Why the Ford-class carrier's island is set far aft — and why moving it would be enormously costly

The US Navy is reportedly evaluating moving the island superstructure on Ford-class aircraft carriers further forward, reportedly at President Donald Trump's insistence that the ships should resemble World War II-era carriers aesthetically. The island's current aft position was chosen for specific operational reasons that provide significant functional benefits. Shifting it would be even more complex and costly than last week's announced plan to abandon the EMALS electromagnetic catapult system on the future USS Doris Miller.
