China's Unitree robot dogs built on US military-funded research

China's Unitree Robotics, one of the world's largest producers of quadruped robots, based its most successful designs on breakthroughs funded by the U.S. Army's DEVCOM Research Laboratory, according to a former U.S. defence official and three researchers involved in the project. The $1,600 Go2 model launched in 2023 helped Unitree rapidly dominate the global market. One Unitree robot has since been shown on Chinese state TV armed and accompanying People's Liberation Army troops on exercises.
