Neanderthals may have reached the Arabian Desert 55,000 years ago

A new study published in Quaternary Science Reviews suggests Neanderthals may have trekked deep into Saudi Arabia's Nefud Desert around 55,000 years ago — far further south than previously believed. The evidence comes from stone tools found at the Jebel Katefeh-1 site near an ancient lake close to the city of Jubbah. No Neanderthal bones have been found in Arabia, and co-lead author Huw Groucutt of the University of Malta says more evidence is needed to confirm the finding.
