AI designs photonic chip components 500 times smaller than human engineers could

Scientists used an AI algorithm to shrink three photonic microchip components — wavelength splitters, mode sorters and mirrors — by up to 500 times compared to human-designed equivalents. Photonic chips use photons instead of electrons, allowing far faster data processing. The AI-generated nanostructures were described by researchers as "beyond human intuition," freeing up significant space for additional on-chip functionality.
