NASA funds quantum mechanics concept to improve gravitational wave detection
NASA's Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC) has awarded a grant to a team led by Paul Stankus at Brookhaven National Laboratory to develop a quantum mechanics-based approach to detecting gravitational waves. Current gravitational wave detectors face enormous engineering challenges in achieving the precision required for measurements. The quantum approach could overcome some of those obstacles and advance gravitational wave astronomy, a field that has grown significantly since the first signal was detected in 2015.
