Coral reefs off Benin, long thought dead, found alive and teeming with life
Researchers have found that coral reef barriers off the coast of Benin in West Africa, presumed dead since fish surveys in the 1960s, are alive and thriving. The discovery was made during an expedition using sonar mapping, underwater drones and stationary video recorders deployed from small fishing boats. The finding could change how scientists assess the condition of coral reefs globally.
