Milky Way merged with dwarf galaxy LKH 11.8 billion years ago
Astronomers have identified the oldest known merger in the Milky Way's history: roughly 11.8 billion years ago our galaxy absorbed a dwarf galaxy designated LKH. Data from space telescopes show the event had a decisive influence on the Milky Way's subsequent evolution. The discovery sheds new light on the earliest stages of our galaxy's formation.
