Rabies risk for tourists — a stray dog bite can be fatal
In tropical countries, rabies poses a threat not only from wild animals but also from bites or scratches by stray dogs and cats. Infectious disease specialist Dr. Bogusz Aksak-Wąs stresses that rapid post-exposure prophylaxis is critical after any such contact. Without prompt treatment, the disease is almost always fatal. He describes the situation as dramatic and hard to imagine by European standards.
