Antarctic tour guides quit over tourism's devastating environmental toll

A study published July 8 in the journal Annals of Tourism Research reveals that 25 former Antarctic tour guides quit their jobs after witnessing the environmental damage caused by tourism. More than 100,000 people visit Antarctica each year, with projections suggesting that number could reach 450,000 within a few years. Guides cited the industry's colossal carbon footprint and the continent's extreme ecological fragility as key reasons for leaving.
