Stockholm scientists solve the mystery of fairy rings

Researchers at Stockholm University have found that fungi form rings because the mycelium grows outward to escape unfavourable conditions — such as nutrient depletion — that it creates in the soil at the centre. The visible mushrooms on the surface are just the fruiting bodies of a much larger underground organism. The findings relied on advanced DNA analysis and novel experiments.
