US kratom poisoning reports surge 6,500% in a decade — seizures, liver damage, deaths

Kratom-related calls to US poison centres jumped from just 19 cases in 2010 to more than 1,200 in 2023 — a rise of 6,500%. Researchers warn the substance can trigger seizures, abnormal heart rhythms, liver damage and breathing problems, with risks rising sharply when combined with other drugs. Severe outcomes, including life-threatening complications, disability and death, also climbed significantly over the period.
