Sahel Alliance with Russia and jihadists: why Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso are sinking deeper into chaos

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger expelled Western troops, left ECOWAS and turned to Russia, forming the Alliance of Sahel States. Despite changing partners, the security situation in the region has not improved and the jihadist threat is expanding toward the Gulf of Guinea. The confederation, built around cooperation with Moscow and Wagner forces, has failed to deliver the stabilisation its founders anticipated.
