Hubble finds ancient galaxy collision that shaped the Milky Way

The Hubble Space Telescope has uncovered evidence that the Milky Way merged with a dwarf galaxy, dubbed LKH, approximately 11.8 billion years ago. The discovery was led by Davide Massari of the Astrophysics and Space Science Observatory in Bologna, Italy. Galaxy mergers are a key driver of galactic growth, and this ancient collision is described as the first major building block of our galaxy.
