Magnetic star may have finally proven Heisenberg right — empty space isn't empty
Werner Heisenberg proposed that empty space is not truly empty, predicting that strong magnetic fields should reveal quantum fluctuations in a vacuum. Observations of a highly magnetised neutron star — a magnetar — have now provided what may be the first astrophysical evidence supporting this theory. Researchers suggest that extreme cosmic environments could serve as natural quantum physics laboratories.
