China restricts AI companions — should other countries follow suit?

China's new AI regulations, which took effect on July 15, ban companion chatbots from inducing emotional dependency or addiction and prohibit AI romantic relationships involving minors. Companies including ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba must now submit their companion platforms to safety evaluations before public release. A mental health expert consulted by the outlet acknowledged that "being heard and accepted, even by a machine, can be meaningful" but supported the case for regulation.
