Three supermassive black holes on verge of collision found in distant galaxy

Astronomers have discovered three active supermassive black holes in a single galaxy whose light took 12.5 billion years to reach us, showing it as it existed less than 1.3 billion years after the Big Bang. It is the first evidence of three active black holes in one galaxy at such a distance. The finding, led by Hannah Übler of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, supports the theory that mergers drove rapid black-hole growth in the early universe.
