Amazon buys rare books, scans them for AI training, then destroys them

An investigation by 404 Media revealed that Amazon is buying books on a massive scale — including rare volumes — scanning them to train artificial intelligence models, and destroying them in the process. Workers at Amazon's VGT3 warehouse in Las Vegas cut off book bindings to speed up scanning, after which the books are permanently destroyed. The investigation was conducted by placing a GPS tracker inside a rare book and following it to the Amazon facility.
