Caltech creates silicon chip optical pathways rivalling fibre optics
Scientists at Caltech have developed ultra-low-loss optical pathways on silicon chips that approach the efficiency of fibre optics and dramatically outperform existing technology at visible wavelengths. The breakthrough could enable more powerful lasers, miniature atomic sensors and clocks, quantum computing systems, and more energy-efficient data centres. The advance represents a significant step toward integrating fibre-optic-level performance directly onto standard silicon chips.
