1.7-billion-year-old fossils may reveal how complex life first emerged

Scientists are examining microscopic fossils found in some of Earth's oldest rocks to understand how simple microbial life made the leap toward plants, animals, and other complex organisms. The research targets one of biology's greatest unsolved transitions, roughly 1.7 billion years ago. Findings could also shed light on whether complex life might emerge elsewhere in the universe.
