Sledgehammer Games, the studio behind several Call of Duty titles including WW2, Vanguard and Modern Warfare 3, reportedly developed a Halo multiplayer prototype at Xbox's behest. The project never progressed beyond the prototype stage and was ultimately cancelled. The information comes from a new report on internal Xbox development decisions.
