Europe's tallest statue of Mary unveiled in Konotop — priest calls it "a monstrosity in open field"
A gigantic statue of the Virgin Mary — described as the tallest of its kind in Europe — has been unveiled in Konotop, Poland. Dominican friar Fr Paweł Gużyński harshly criticised the monument, calling it "a monstrosity," "a King Kong in an open field," and "a monument to oneself." Vatican expert Prof. Arkadiusz Stempin described it as a manifestation of Polish religious "gigantomania." The construction has sparked a broad debate about the boundaries of piety and sacred aesthetics in Poland.
