Transport psychologist explains why passengers skip seatbelts on coaches
Transport psychologist Dr Andrzej Markowski warns that coach passengers routinely skip seatbelts due to "herd instinct" — if those around them don't buckle up, they don't either. A second factor is "magical thinking," the irrational belief that an accident won't happen to them personally. While buckling up in a car has become an automatic habit, that reflex doesn't transfer to coaches. The expert stresses the consequences of this behaviour can be severe.
