Scientists build virtual population of 8.3 billion AI agents to simulate humanity

Over 200 scientists from leading universities and AI labs have created a virtual population of 8.3 billion AI agents — exceeding Earth's actual population. The project is designed to test digital products and study consumer behaviour. Researchers warn, however, of serious ethical and societal risks tied to simulating human behaviour at this unprecedented scale.
