Tommy John, baseball pitcher whose name defines elbow surgery, dies aged 83
Tommy John, the four-time All-Star New York Yankees pitcher who became the namesake of the Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery, has died at the age of 83 at his home in Florida, surrounded by his family including his wife Cheryl. John had recently been in hospice care. He was the first athlete to undergo the pioneering operation, which has since saved the careers of hundreds of baseball players.
