Magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes Indonesia, killing at least 40

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia, killing at least 40 people. The first quake hit at a shallow depth of around 10 km. A second tremor of magnitude 6.9 subsequently struck near Pematangsiantar on the western island of Sumatra, at a much deeper 183 km.
