Four Antonello da Messina Renaissance paintings stolen from Sicilian museum
Four major works by 15th-century Renaissance master Antonello da Messina were stolen from the MuMe regional museum in the Sicilian city of Messina on the ferragosto national holiday on 15 August. Thieves entered the museum in the evening, possibly exploiting the city's focus on the La Vara religious festival. The theft occurred just one day after Italian police recovered paintings by Cézanne, Renoir and Matisse.
