China unveils updated 1:5 million moon map with revised ancient geological eras

China's Institute of Geology (IGCAGS) unveiled a new 1:5 million-scale moon map on August 6, updating a 2024 edition with new scientific findings. The map redraws boundaries for the ancient Aitkenian, Nectarian and Imbrian lunar geological periods. Reprocessed spectral data also shows KREEP terrain — rich in potassium, rare-earth elements and phosphorus — to be more continuous and abundant than previously thought. Analysts say the map signals bold Chinese space ambitions beyond mere technological soft power.
