Black rhinos return to Zimbabwe's Matusadona after 30 years of near-extinction

In May, 17 black rhinos were reintroduced to Zimbabwe's Matusadona National Park after nearly 30 years of absence caused by poaching. The Zambezi Valley was once a stronghold for the critically endangered species, but Zimbabwe's economic crisis allowed poachers to wipe them out. Reserve manager Mike Pelham spent the first night outdoors watching the animals settle into secured enclosures. Experts say genetic diversity and local community involvement are key to the long-term success of the comeback.
