After 50, the brain loses microglia — a change that may raise Alzheimer's risk

Scientists have found that the brains of people over 50 lose microglia — the brain's immune cells — which are replaced by cells with a stronger inflammatory profile. This may help explain why ageing increases the brain's susceptibility to dementia. Researchers caution, however, that no causal link has yet been established, as many people of very advanced age never develop dementia.
