Lebanon abolishes death penalty — first Arab country to do so
Lebanon's parliament voted on Tuesday to abolish the death penalty, replacing it with life imprisonment and hard labour. The country becomes the first Arab nation to take this step. Amnesty International reports that at least 467 people were executed across Arab countries in 2025.
