Europe's tallest Virgin Mary statue — 55-metre figure in Konotop stirs controversy
Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski on Saturday consecrated a 55-metre statue of the Virgin Mary in Konotop, Warmia-Masuria — the tallest such figure in Europe. The monument was funded by billionaire Roman Karkosik. The statue has sparked controversy: Dominican friar Father Paweł Gużyński called it "King Kong in an open field" and a form of a "golden calf."
