New CMS rule bars Medicaid funds for gender-affirming care for minors
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) finalized a rule this week barring federal Medicaid and CHIP funds from being used to pay for gender-affirming medications and surgery for minors. On Thursday, the Department of Health and Human Services referred hundreds of healthcare groups to the Justice Department over diagnostic coding practices among gender-affirming care clinicians. Legal experts suggest the new CMS rule may prove harder to challenge in court than earlier Trump administration actions targeting transgender healthcare.
