Japan summons Russian ambassador after Putin visits disputed Kuril Islands

Vladimir Putin made his first visit to the disputed Kuril Islands, prompting a sharp reaction from Tokyo. Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi summoned Russian Ambassador Nikolay Nozdrev, while Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the visit "absolutely unacceptable." Japan considers the islands, seized by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II, to be Japanese territory under international law.
