Japan mulls new sanctions after Putin visits disputed Kuril island Etorofu

Japan's government is considering additional sanctions against Russia following Vladimir Putin's visit to the disputed island of Etorofu (Russian: Iturup) in the Kuril archipelago, which Japan calls the Northern Territories. The islands have been contested between the two countries since the end of World War II. Tokyo views the visit as a violation of Japanese sovereignty claims.
