Experts: latest UN plastic treaty talks are less ambitious than before

A year after UN plastic treaty negotiations collapsed in Geneva, diplomats met informally in Nairobi from June 30 to July 3 to draft a new document. Experts and NGOs say the latest version is even less ambitious than its predecessor, weakened by tenuous commitments on human health and heavy lobbying from the plastic industry. Critics warn the treaty is moving backwards rather than towards ending plastic pollution.
