NASA funds microscopic floating sensors to map the poorly understood "ignorosphere"
Benjamin Schafer of Rarefied Technologies has received a NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC) grant to develop a fleet of microscopic sensors that float on sunlight in the atmospheric layer between 30 and 100 km altitude, dubbed the "ignorosphere." This region plays a significant role in global climate dynamics but is currently only reachable by sounding rockets that gather data for just a few minutes. The new sensors could stay aloft for months, providing sustained observations.
